China’s Global Governance Forum put artificial intelligence and trade alongside questions about activity in the deep sea, polar regions and outer space, with Foreign Minister Wang Yi calling for stronger governance across those domains Friday.

Wang spoke at the forum’s opening in Xiongan. Wang said AI should be governed with human oversight and benefit humanity. His remarks placed human oversight among the governance questions raised at the meeting.

Wang called for more Global South representation in international affairs and described its rise as the world’s most consequential shift since World War II. Wang also backed preserving the multilateral trading system.

The three-day forum is the inaugural Xiongan gathering and was introduced by President Xi Jinping last year. Beijing presents it as part of its diplomatic push for multilateralism and a more equitable global governance system, amid China’s view that the current arrangement is deficient.
