The increasing conflicts that surround the Islamic nation of Iran could potentially trigger an all-out conflict that could amount to world war 3. Recent reports have now suggested that an explosion that occurred in Saudi Arabia was the work of Iran-backed militia that are based in Iraq.
Saudi Arabia is currently experiencing a national security problem following an attack that occurred in Riyadh in the form of an explosion. An analyst has warned that this national security issue also comes as the missile capabilities in Iraq have become more developed. Reports have suggested that the cause of the explosion was an intercepted missile and according to local media Arabiya TV, there is video footage of the explosion that occurred.
“Riyadh is aware that ties between Iran and many of the Iraq-based Shia militias are more established than they are with the Houthis,” said Torbjorn Soltvedt of Verisk Maplecroft.
Prior to the explosion in Riyadh, a Saudi-based military group claimed to have intercepted a projectile that was supposedly aimed at the country’s capital. They have since blamed the explosion in Riyadh on the Houthi group, but the Iran-backed organization denied the accusation. Another group called the Brigades of the Righteous Promise or the Alwiya al-Waad al-Haq claimed responsibility and said that the missiles came from Iraq, according to the Times. The outlet also went on to note that the group is receiving support from Iran.
The blast was condemned by the E3, made up of France, Germany, and the United Kingdom. Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab also condemned the attacks, saying it “threatened the loss of life.”
Iran’s tensions with the United States under now-former President Donald Trump’s administration has escalated throughout his term. With Joe Biden becoming the US’ new Commander-in-Chief, Israel’s top military chief has warned against the US’ returning to the Iran nuclear deal even if the agreement has been strengthened.
Israel’s Lieutenant General Aviv Kouhavi warned that it would be wrong for the US to come back to the deal and added that the Israeli army is prepared to launch an attack on Iran. Iran on the other hand, has urged the US to return to the agreement.
