XRP is facing renewed selling pressure as exchange reserves remain near their highest levels in a year, raising concerns about the cryptocurrency's short-term price outlook. Despite recent attempts to recover from weeks of extreme volatility, on-chain data suggests that XRP traders remain cautious amid broader crypto market uncertainty.
According to data from blockchain analytics platform CryptoQuant, total XRP exchange reserves reached approximately 11.81 billion tokens as of October 17, 2026. The figure is approaching the highest level recorded over the past 12 months, indicating that a substantial amount of XRP remains on centralized cryptocurrency exchanges.
High exchange reserves often attract attention because tokens held on trading platforms can be sold more easily than assets stored in private wallets. While elevated reserves do not necessarily indicate immediate selling activity, they suggest that significant XRP liquidity remains available to enter the market.
The development comes as XRP struggles to regain momentum following its recent price decline. Analysts warn that persistently high exchange balances could increase downside risks, particularly if investors begin liquidating holdings amid weakening market sentiment.
Meanwhile, derivatives market data reveals a notable reduction in leveraged XRP trading activity on Binance, the world's largest cryptocurrency exchange by trading volume.
Binance XRP open interest fell 15.8%, declining from $538.1 million on October 4 to approximately $453 million on October 17. The decrease indicates that traders have been closing positions or experiencing liquidations as market volatility continues.
Falling open interest typically signals reduced participation in futures markets and declining leveraged exposure. Combined with elevated XRP exchange reserves, the trend suggests that traders are becoming increasingly defensive rather than aggressively positioning for a sustained price recovery.
However, declining open interest does not automatically confirm a bearish trend. Reduced leverage can also help stabilize markets by limiting the risk of cascading liquidations during sudden price movements.
For XRP investors, the combination of high exchange reserves and shrinking Binance open interest presents a mixed outlook. While reduced speculative activity could support market stabilization, the substantial supply held on exchanges remains a potential source of selling pressure.
Market participants will likely monitor XRP exchange inflows, open interest, and price movements closely to determine whether selling pressure intensifies or the cryptocurrency establishes a stronger recovery trend.
