Chinese President Xi Jinping called for China to improve the quality of economic development while keeping growth on a reasonable path, linking the agenda to public needs and stability, Xinhua reported Thursday.

Xi framed the economic goal around wider social progress and people’s living conditions. He said China should meet people’s “ever-growing needs for a better life” while preserving stability, Xinhua reported.

On the military, Xi emphasized upholding the Communist Party of China’s “absolute leadership” over the armed forces and called for “political building of the military.” He cited reform, science and technology, talent, and governance under law as areas for strengthening the military.

The Straits Times reported that the speech was part of events marking the 90th anniversary of the Long March.
