Chinese President Xi Jinping used a condolence message for former Japanese Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda to state his hopes for China-Japan relations, Reuters reported Tuesday, citing China’s state news agency Xinhua.

Xi sent the message to Fukuda’s family after the former prime minister died Thursday at age 90, Xinhua reported.

Xi said he hoped Japan’s current leaders would build on earlier generations’ work, follow “the four political documents between China and Japan” and preserve the political basis of bilateral relations, Xinhua reported.

Xi praised Fukuda as a politician of integrity and responsibility and “an old friend of the Chinese people,” the agency said. He credited Fukuda with supporting friendship between the countries and holding what Xi considered a sound view of history.

Xi said China would remember Fukuda’s contributions to bilateral ties and Asia’s development.
