ZTE introduced the world’s first under-display camera on a consumer smartphone last year, and the company is highly expected to deliver its second-generation soon with the ZTE Axon 30. The upcoming device is also rumored to sport an improved display this year.
ZTE Axon 30 specs: What to expect other than an upgraded under-display camera
There has been a slight change in the tech company’s strategy for its flagship smartphone series this year. ZTE introduced two new models under the Axon 30 series, namely the ZTE Axon 30 Pro and ZTE Axon 30 Ultra, that were released in April. However, the company still has one more device to announce, and that will be the standard ZTE Axon 30 that will sport its second-gen under-display camera solution.
The company posted a teaser on the Chinese social media site Weibo on Monday for the upcoming ZTE Axon 30. The details included were scant, but ZTE provided a sneak peek of the device’s front side. As expected, there is no display notch or hole-punch camera present.
There is one small change that can be spotted in the teaser image. The volume controls on the right side of the device now look like a one longer button, unlike in the ZTE Axon 20, where there was a small space that separated the volume up and volume down buttons. A smaller button, likely for power and lock/unlock functions, is also available on the same side.

The Axon 20 had a 32MP f/2.0 sensor under the screen. But it remains to be seen if the ZTE Axon 30’s front camera will have higher pixels and aperture as part of its new-gen improvements.
Meanwhile, Sparrow News reports that the ZTE Axon 30 display could offer an improved refresh rate from 90Hz to 120Hz. This is a likely scenario since the ZTE Axon 30 Pro already launched with a 120Hz AMOLED display.
The Axon 20 was powered by a Snapdragon 7 series chip. But with the ZTE Axon 30 Pro and Ultra launching with Snapdragon 888, there is a chance for the standard ZTE Axon 30 to get the same SoC.
ZTE Axon 30 release date could be set for July
The Axon 20 was launched last September, but it appears that its successor could be released much earlier. Tech leaker Digital Chat Station posted on Weibo last month that ZTE employees seemingly hinted that the device could be unveiled sometime within the Cancer zodiac duration, which runs from June 22 to July 22. The official teaser mentioned above does not mention a launch window, but it promises that the phone with a new under-display camera is “coming soon.”
