At least 12 people were reported killed in an attack on a home in northwestern Nigeria’s Zamfara State, where residents were also abducted, BusinessDay reported, citing local sources.

Those sources placed the raid late Saturday in Gidan Taba, a village in Maradun Local Government Area. They described the assailants as suspected Lakurawa bandits, the Nigerian newspaper reported. BusinessDay said local sources reported that the attackers shut a family inside one room before igniting the building.

Dosara, a local leader, held funeral prayers in the village Sunday, according to BusinessDay. He said a father, his wives and young children were among those killed. Dosara attributed the deaths to heat inside the room and said the blaze reached the roof without directly burning the victims.

A local source told BusinessDay that vigilantes later freed some residents taken during the raid after fighting the assailants. The outlet reported that the number abducted had not been established as tensions continued in the community.
