The death toll from Monday’s strike on an aid distribution point in Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhia region reached 43, President Volodymyr Zelensky said Thursday, after crews located a missing person alive.
Zelensky said a person previously listed as missing was found alive on Nov. 5. The updated toll followed an earlier EconoTimes report that 26 people had been reported killed. Ukrainian updates have raised the reported death toll over time.
Zaporizhzhia police estimated that up to 33 people could remain beneath rubble in Komyshuvakha. Search teams continued working at the site while authorities sought to identify those killed.
Reuters verified body-camera footage from a police officer killed in the attack. The video showed the moments before a second strike hit a shelter where residents had taken cover after a radio warning.
Russia’s Defence Ministry said its forces targeted Ukrainian military units near Komyshuvakha and two other settlements. It claimed as many as 25 Ukrainian servicemen were killed.
