Senior Lecturer in Renewable Energy & Energy Management, Coventry University
Remote island states are often locked into, and heavily reliant upon, imported fossil fuels. This has a detrimental impact on their environments, economies and societies, and results in low levels of energy security. These same islands invariably have favourable renewable energy resources (solar, wind, bioenergy and marine), and storage potential (pumped storage hydro, battery or marine compressed air). My research relates to the application of sustainable energy technologies to aid the transition of these fossil-fuel reliant energy systems towards clean and sustainable energy systems. Areas of interest include:
- Wind resource studies for small island states
- Renewable energy technology adaptation for tropical latitudes
- Energy system modelling
- Integration of EVs into island energy grids
- Storage options for small island states
- Building design for tropical latitudes
Oil firms want to drill in four of the UK’s areas of outstanding natural beauty

Think of onshore oil fields and images of oil derricks and nodding donkeys may spring to mind, perhaps in Texas or the Middle East. So it might come as a surprise to learn that the UK has its own onshore oil fields, mostly...
Zero-carbon electric transport is already in reach for small islands
May 25, 2019 06:51 am UTC| Insights & Views Technology
At a recent talk on the UKs energy sector, the head of an electric utility company claimed that the problem of decarbonising our electricity sector is fixed. Eyebrows were raised at this, but his point quickly became...
