Janie Maxwell

Associate Lecturer in Climate Change and Health, University of Melbourne

Dr. Janie Maxwell is a General Practitioner and an academic at the Nossal Institute for Global Health at the University of Melbourne. Janie’s interest in health equity and sustainability underpin her work which spans clinical practice, research and teaching. Janie’s academic work focuses on the nexus between climate change and health, in particular the role of the health profession and medical education in climate change.

Janie has published a paper on the opportunities for medical education on climate change and is currently leading international research to develop consensus for globally relevant learning objectives on climate change and health in undergraduate medical education. Janie is also conducting research exploring general practitioners’ experiences in climate change and health advocacy. Janie teaches in global health, public health and climate change at the masters and undergraduate level and is completing the Graduate Certificate of University Teaching.

As a clinician, Janie has a special interest in remote and global health, primary care, psychiatry and obstetrics. Janie co-authored a book chapter: Mental health, the forgotten NCD in Dancing in the Rain: living with NCDs. Janie is a fellow of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners and a Diplomate with the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists. Janie is a fellow of the Centre for Sustainability Leadership and has been on national and state committees of Doctors for the Environment Australia and working groups with the Climate and Health Alliance.
