Professeur à l'École de design de l'UQAM. Chercheur au CR-IUSMM. Titulaire de la Chaire Diament, chaire de recherche stratégique en design pour la cybersanté mentale, Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM)
Philosophe et psychologue de formation, Stéphane Vial est un chercheur en design spécialisé dans l’innovation numérique responsable.

II est né en France, a fait ses études à Lyon (philosophie) et à Paris (psychologie clinique), et a obtenu son doctorat en philosophie à l’Université Paris Descartes en 2012, puis son Habilitation à diriger des recherches en design à l’Université de Nîmes en 2015.

Depuis 2019, il est professeur à l’École de design de l’Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM), où il enseigne la théorie du design et le design d’interaction. Il est aussi titulaire de la Chaire Diament, Chaire de recherche UQAM en design pour la cybersanté mentale, et chercheur régulier au Centre de recherche de l'Institut universitaire en santé mentale de Montréal (CR-IUSMM).

Il est l’auteur de plus de six livres publiés aux Presses universitaires de France, The MIT Press ou chez Springer, incluant “L’être et l’écran : comment le numérique change la perception“, “Le design“ (Que sais-je ?) ou “Court traité du design“, ainsi que de nombreux articles. Il est également le cofondateur et directeur de la rédaction de la revue Sciences du Design aux Presses universitaires de France.

Il a fait une première partie de sa carrière en France, où il a été maître de conférences en design à l’Université de Nîmes (2013-2018) et professeur de philosophie à l’École Boulle à Paris (2005-2013). Il a également exercé à Paris comme designer web (2007-2015) et comme psychologue clinicien (2004-2007).
