Nelson is currently pursuing his PhD in Accounting at Concordia University. He is accountant, MBA, lecturer of accounting topics and former consultant for the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development.

Nelson's current research is focused on the international aid chain, where he explores how governmental donors and cooperation agencies —such as Global Affairs Canada— build trust and accountability relationships with beneficiary organizations of international cooperation projects in developing countries.
