Dr. Frank Hayden Endowed Chair in Sport and Social Impact, Western University
David is Reader in the Anthropology of Sport and works within the Centre for Olympic Studies and Research at Loughborough University, UK. He graduated from Trent University (Canada) with a BSc honours in general anthropology in 1989. In 1991 David was awarded a MA in social/cultural anthropology at the University of Toronto. After moving to the UK to undertake a PhD in medical anthropology at UCL he was awarded this degree in 1997 for his work examining the social implications of the professionalisation of sports medicine.

His teaching focuses on the cultural politics and anthropology/sociology of body within the fields of sport and leisure. Equity related issues are central to his main research focus the Paralympic Games. Specifically David is interested in Paralympism, ‘enabling’ technology and society, ethical issues related to disability, and [dis]abilty culture. A former athlete, administrator and coach within the Paralympic Movement David is author of Sport, Professionalism and Pain: Ethnographies of Injury and Risk (Routledge, 2004) and The Cultural Politics of the Paralympic Movement: through an anthropological lens (Routledge, 2008).
