Jean Burke

Senior Lecturer in Social Work, Australian Catholic University

Jean Burke is an Australian social worker with a PhD (2009) in social work and community development from the University of New South Wales, Australia. Her PhD work focused on community and social networks and HIV and infant feeding in Central Tanzania. From 1992-2003 Jean lived in the United Republic of Tanzania, mainly working in HIV community education and support while investigating prevention of mother-to-child transmission of HIV. Since 2004 she has worked as a Swahili interpreter and translator in Australia. Since 2011, Jean has been an academic at the Australian Catholic University, primarily maintaining a research focus on East African human rights issues. She examines media portrayal of Africans with albinism and their human rights context and related regional concerns including disability, human trafficking, criminal networks, child sacrifice and witchcraft beliefs.
