Valerie Fridland is a professor of linguistics at the University of Nevada in Reno and the co-author of the book "Sociophonetics" as well as co-editor of the "Elements in Sociolinguistics" series with Cambridge University Press. Her new general audience book on popular speech habits, called "Like, Literally, Dude: Arguing for the Good in Bad English," is forthcoming with Viking Penguin Press.
