Andrew Reeson

Behavioural Economist, CSIRO

Dr Andrew Reeson is an economist with CSIRO Computational Informatics in Canberra. His current work is centred on innovation and the service sector, including the impact of next generation broadband on the delivery of services by business and government. This involves applying econometric modelling and behavioural economics to better understand human decision-making and inform the design of innovation policy.

He is also interested in market design, and has worked on markets addressing a range of environmental policy issues including carbon, water buybacks, salinity mitigation, biodiversity conservation and even feral camel control.

Dr Reeson led a major research project integrating economic design principles with behavioural economics and landscape ecology to develop a policy approach to address landscape-scale conservation objectives through competitive tenders. This involved integrating economic theory and experiments with landscape ecology, work which has been influential in both academic and policy circles.

Another policy highlight was contributing an invited review of behavioural economics for the Henry Tax Review, the key findings of which were taken up by the Review. He has 25 published papers across a broad range of topics, which have been cited over 500 times in the academic literature.

With colleagues he has established the Resources, Energy and Environmental Markets Laboratory (REEML) at the University of Sydney, which now runs a range of experimental economics-based research projects.

REEML provides the opportunity to test both economic theory and proposed policy interventions under controlled laboratory conditions, contributing rigorous empirical science to inform policy design.
