Olayinka Olatokunbo Ogunkoya

Professor of Geomorphology, Obafemi Awolowo University
Professor Olayinka Olatokunbo Ogunkoya is a Nigerian fluvial geomorphologist specializing in the hydrology of low-order catchments. He was born on April 9, 1951, and obtained B.Sc. (Hons.) in 1973 and PhD in 1980 from the University of Lagos and University of Ife, respectively. He was in 1980 appointed Lecturer II, Department of Geography, University of Ife, where he became Professor in 1995. He was Visiting Scholar Institute of Hydrology, Wallingford, England between 1989 and 1990, and was the University Liaison Coordinator of Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria between 2007 and 2011. He began lecturing part-time at the Pan African University Institute of Life Sciences, University of Ibadan, Ibadan in 2016.

Professor Ogunkoya has led studies or collaborated with others in Fluvial Geomorphology/Hydrology and Environmental Science: Catchment hydrological response patterns and processes, Catchment aquifers’ safe yield, Catchment sediment yield and denudation rates, Hydrograph modelling, Storm flow hysteresis and water quality patterns, and Hydrological pathway analyses; Catchment structural features and hydrological implications; Hydrological and environmental impacts of urbanization and development projects; and, Environmental Sensitivity Index mapping. The findings have been published in numerous reputable international and local journals, book chapters, technical reports, and conference proceedings. He has also mentored 18 M.Sc. and 4 PhD graduates.

Professor Ogunkoya was Head, Department of Geography, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife between 1990 and 1992; Nigeria’s Representative on the Governing Council of the UNECA African Institute for Geospatial Information Science and Technology (AFRIGIST)), Ile-Ife, Nigeria between 1990 and 1992, and Foundation Member, College of Research Associates, United Nations University Institute for Natural Resources in Africa, Legon, Ghana in 1998. He has been member and chairman of Federal Ministry of Environment Panel Review Meetings for EIAs of various projects. He is married with three children.
