PhD candidate, Institute for Safety Governance and Criminology, University of Cape Town Carina is a third year PhD candidate at the Institute for Safety Governance and Criminology at the University of Cape Town. Her research is focused on responses to organized crime, specifically heroin and ivory trafficking in East Africa, using the international community's response to piracy off the Horn of Africa as a possible model. She has done extensive research on heroin trafficking along the southern heroin trafficking route stretching from Afghanistan to East and Southern Africa, ivory poaching and trafficking from East Africa to Asia, as well as the global response to Somali piracy.
