Tony Curran

Senior Public Engagement Fellow, University of Southampton

Dr Tony Curran is a member of the University’s Public Engagement with Research unit. He runs the University’s Researchers’ Café and the University Challenged competition, and supports the Research Roadshow. He leads on improving the spectrum of ways in which all members of the University can get involved with engaging the public.
Tony gives talks and runs interactive shows with environmental themes, via www.tonycurran.co.uk: the burger apocalypse, the sustainability game show, the future of energy and the future of waste. He has a new show in 2017 on biodiversity loss.
Tony Curran's previous research project was ‘Zero Waste in Industrial Networks’ (ZeroWIN), working with Professor Ian Williams. This work sought to combine innovative technologies with waste prevention methods and strategies such as eco-design, industrial symbiosis, green supply chain management and product stewardship (and producer responsibility) in key industrial sectors in Europe. Particular focus was on sustainable construction and demolition practices.
Tony completed his PhD in 2008 on ‘Household Bulky Waste Collection and Re-use in England’. In addition to a number of academic articles published, this research has been rewritten as a chapter for Dr Tim Cooper’s book ‘Longer Lasting Products: Alternatives to the Throwaway Society’.
