Ray Cas

Professor emeritus, Monash University
Ray Cas is an Emeritus Professor in the School of Earth, Atmosphere and Environment at Monash University, Melbourne, Australia, and an Honorary Adjunct Professor at the University of Tasmania, also in Australia. He is an international expert in physical volcanology, specialising in modern volcanic eruption processes, associated hazards, the analysis of the facies architecture of ancient volcanic and sedimentary rock successions, palaeovolcanological and palaeoenvironmental reconstructions, and the relationships between volcanism and mineralisation. He was the President of the International Association for Volcanology and Chemistry of the Earth’s Interior (IAVCEI) from 2011-2015 and now serves as the Immediate Past President on the IAVCEI Executive Committee. He is co-author of the internationally best-selling text on volcanology, “Volcanic Successions: Modern & Ancient”, and co-presenter of the most successful geoscience professional shortcourse in Australia, with the same title. The course has been presented at least annually since 1982 with over 1200 industry and research professionals, academics and research students attending. In addition, he has published over 130 refereed publications and over 150 conference abstracts, and has supervised 35 PhD, 12 Masters and over 120 Honours students. He and his students are conducting research in both modern and ancient volcanic terrains globally, including subaerial and subaqueous, and mineralised successions. He has an extensive record of collaboration with industry and other researchers. His current research interests include the eruption and flow dynamics of pyroclastic flows, the dynamics of intraplate basaltic volcanic provinces, and the relationships between volcanism and mineralisation. Ray frequently provides commentary and interviews to the media on current volcanic eruptions around the world.
