Lecturer in the School of Media, Creative Arts and Social Inquiry, Curtin University
My research is directed at representation and negotiation of reclaimed island and waterfront spaces. These investigations draw on cultural and media studies approaches in examining how institutional practices promote and constrain democratic negotiation of spaces and places. Currently, I am working on a monograph with Susan Leong on Asian-Australian relations. My last book was a 2016 co-edited volume, titled 'Indian Ocean Futures: Communities, Sustainability and Security'.
Outside academia, I managed a Southeast Asian architectural media group from 1999 to 2009 after working as a journalist and editor in The Hague and Jakarta. I also engage, occasionally, in institutional politics as a member of the Greens in Western Australia.
