Dr. Hanson holds a joint appointment with the Department of Sociology and Criminology and the Center. She has conducted research in Venezuela and Colombia on issues such as participatory democratic neighborhood experiments, socialist ideology, civilian police reform, police militarization and its impacts on organized crime, and the effects of police-community meetings on citizen attitudes and police behavior. Her current book project looks at the limits of police reform in Latin America, using Venezuela as a case study.
