His primary research interests are family business, entrepreneurship and strategic management. He has published over 175 articles in academic journals on those subjects and has been designated as a highly cited researcher seven times by Clarivate and ranked 23rd in his field in the US (38th in the world) by Research.Com. In addition, he has conducted over 1,000 studies of national and state-level Small Business Development Center programs. That work has twice been presented at U.S. Congressional Hearings on Small Business.
