Matt Ebbatson

Dr Matt Ebbatson is the Aviation Postgraduate Course Director in the Faculty of Science, Engineering & Technology at Swinburne University. He holds a BSc Hons (Physics) from the University of Leeds, as well as an MSc (Human Factors & Safety Analysis in Aviation) and PhD from Cranfield University, a highly specialised aviation postgraduate institution.

Matt has more than 10 years' experience engaging with the aviation industry to investigate and resolve human factors and safety related challenges in Britain, Australia and New Zealand. He commenced his career in operations as a flight data analyst and safety management advisor for Monarch Airlines, London. In 2010 he joined academia while maintaining and expanding a strong set of industry relationships. This include assisting Air New Zealand, Air Nelson and Airways New Zealand to safely deploy advanced automation capabilities within their respective operations.

Matt’s research interests include Human Machine Interface design, pilot performance assessment and development, automation effects, flight simulation and pilot/operator training. He has a particular interest in the application of technology to improve safety and efficiency in aircraft operations, including enhanced pilot performance sensing and monitoring, advanced flight deck automation and innovative training methodologies.

Matt is committed to the delivery of exemplary higher education in aviation that is both engaging and authentic. In 2016 he was awarded a Faculty of Science, Engineering & Technology Teaching Excellence Award in recognition of this pursuit.
