I am a psychologist turned criminologist, with an interest in comparative criminology, prisons, and crime and justice in the Netherlands, and the Nordic countries. And then in particular prisons in the Nordic countries.
I studied psychology in Groningen (the Netherlands), received my PhD from Leiden University (the Netherlands) and joined the University of Portsmouth in 1998.
At present I am Associate Dean looking after the research for the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences at the University of Portsmouth.
