This month marks the debut of a unique feature on certain personal computers running Microsoft's Windows 11 operating system – the "Copilot key."
Microsoft, in collaboration with OpenAI, aims to capitalize on its strong partnership by incorporating an AI key, initiating the company's foray into generative AI technology.
Microsoft's Boldest Move Since the 1990s
Representing a substantial shift in PC keyboard design, the introduction of the Copilot key is Microsoft's most significant alteration since the introduction of the special Windows key in the 1990s.
Positioned near the space bar and adorned with the Copilot logo, this AI key signals a departure from traditional keyboard layouts. On certain computers, it will replace the right "CTRL" key, while on others, it will take the place of a menu key.
According to Voa News, Microsoft collaborates with computer manufacturers like Dell to embed the AI key in new Windows 11 PCs. The Copilot key will serve as a direct link to Microsoft's AI chatbot, enhancing user accessibility and functionality. Dell Technologies has already embraced this innovation, making the Copilot key a distinctive feature on its latest XPS laptops.
The integration of AI keys reflects an industry trend initiated by companies like Apple and Google.
However, Microsoft's dominance in the personal computer market, with approximately 82% of desktop computers, laptops, and workstations running Windows, strengthens its influence. This move positions Microsoft as a leader in incorporating AI into daily computing experiences, surpassing its competitors in market share, including Apple and Google.

According to CBC, The New York Times recently filed legal action against OpenAI and Microsoft, alleging copyright infringement related to tools like ChatGPT and Copilot.
