ZHUHAI, China, LONDON and NANJING, China, Oct. 31, 2016 -- Imagination Technologies (IMG.L) and Actions Semiconductor Co., Ltd. (Nasdaq:ACTS), and Nanjing Ruiyue Technology Co., Ltd. (Nibiru) have teamed to bring an immersive graphics experience to Nibiru’s new 2K virtual reality (VR) headset solution. The solution is in mass production and is being adopted by many Chinese OEMs.
The Nibiru VR solution brings all-in-one VR headsets into the era of faster, clearer and more power-saving technology. It uses the high-performance S900VR processor from Actions Semiconductor, one of China’s leading fabless semiconductor companies. The S900VR processor is an all-in-one solution designed for high-performance 360 degree panoramic VR devices. It provides up to 4K video and image effects with high refresh rates and a low persistence display to minimize cybersickness, as well as latencies below 20ms.
The S900VR incorporates Imagination’s PowerVR G6230 GPU enabling advanced graphics performance. With market-leading power efficiency, the PowerVR G6230 GPU delivers minimal latency and long-term-sustained high-performance rendering required for maximum enjoyment of the growing range of high-quality immersive video content on mainstream VR headsets. Based on the collaboration, Actions’ S900 SoC is able to achieve around 10% more frames per second (fps) at up to 10% lower power consumption versus Actions’ previous generation products. This leads to a headset that can run for a longer time at high speed while delivering a more immersive VR experience.
Says Dr. Zhenyu Zhou, CEO of Actions Semiconductor: “Actions is developing a range of leading-edge solutions for the fast growing virtual reality market featuring amazing audio and video capabilities. Our high-end S900VR delivers a superior experience, due in large part to the stellar performance and power efficiency of Imagination’s PowerVR GPU. We are delighted that Nibiru selected the S900VR for its exciting new headset solution.”
Says Graham Deacon, VP PowerVR business operations, Imagination: “We are now entering the era of VR that can really satisfy consumer expectations, with the advent of hardware that allows for extremely compelling VR experiences at relatively affordable levels. The innovative new Nibiru headset with Actions’ powerful S900VR is a great example. We worked closely with Actions and Nibiru to ensure the S900VR can achieve the high performance and low latency required to deliver a captivating user experience.”
Says Peter Liu, senior VP, Nibiru: “With Nibiru’s innovative and affordable solutions, it is no longer a dream for ordinary people to enjoy virtual reality. We are working closely with partners like Actions and Imagination to ensure our solutions provide the cutting edge technologies that will deliver highly immersive gaming and video experiences to consumers. For our new headset solution, it was a straightforward decision to select Action’s new high-end S900VR with PowerVR graphics.”
