Fans may have noticed that Angelina Jolie has had more film directorial jobs lately. However, the shift in her Hollywood career has reportedly left her almost broke while continuously fighting a custody battle with estranged husband Brad Pitt.
A source told Radar Online that Jolie has been living “paycheck to paycheck” recently after focusing more on directing films while accepting lesser acting roles. Of course, note that Jolie’s single paycheck could amount to tens of millions for major flicks but the insider insisted that the actress is currently tight on budget.
Fans might recall that Jolie’s latest starring role on a big-budget film was the first “Maleficent” movie which came out in 2014. In the same year, she directed and produced the war-themed film “Unbroken.” She then starred with Pitt in “By the Sea” which they also produced and Jolie directed.
Angelina Jolie is still named the second highest-paid actress this year, following Scarlett Johansson, as she reportedly asks for up to $28 million on major movie roles such as “Maleficent 2.” The sequel film is currently in post-production and slated to premiere in 2020.
However, Radar’s source claimed Jolie is yet to receive part of her $25 million paycheck for "Maleficent 2" and that the actress has grown “desperate” for it. “Her days of taking a five-year break from acting at a time are over, simply because she won’t be able to continue to afford her family’s lifestyle if she does,” said the insider.
Meanwhile, another source “close to Jolie” told Gossip Cop that she will not stop on her passion for directing films. Jolie reportedly does not accept movie projects based on payments even though she has been consistently named one of the highest-paid actresses in Hollywood for many years now.
Aside from her Hollywood commitments, Angelina Jolie has been the Special Envoy to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees since 2012. Then there is also her ongoing divorce proceedings and custody battle with Brad Pitt.
