The much-awaited update for “Borderlands 3” arrived on Thursday. As promised, it activates the cross-platform play function except for PlayStation consoles. Gearbox also introduces a new toggle that practically makes seasonal events accessible without expiration.
‘Borderlands 3’ cross-play won’t support PlayStation consoles
Once players launch “Borderlands 3” following the update’s release, they will find a prompt asking them to opt-in to the SHiFT Matchmaking to join cross-play matches. Whether the new feature is activated or not, players will be asked to set up a “Crossplay Display Name.”
It should be unique, with 3-16 characters, and starts with a letter. Their cross-play name may include characters from a-z, A-Z, and 0-9. “Borderlands 3” will allow the use of underscores and hyphens, just not consecutively. The name can be edited later through the account settings on SHiFT.
The arrival of cross-play support is not a surprise to “Borderlands 3” fans. Gearbox Software CEO Randy Pitchford revealed the new feature in late May, along with the early notice that PS4 and PS5 consoles are not supported.
Good news or bad news first? Good News: An update for Borderlands 3 has been prepared for release that includes full crossplay support across all platforms. Bad News: For certification, we have been required by the publisher to remove crossplay support for PlayStation consoles.

The developer did not provide a specific explanation, but Pitchford’s previous statement suggests they originally planned to include the PlayStation systems in the cross-play function. This means only players using PC (Steam and Epic), Mac, Stadia, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S can enjoy the update.
‘Borderlands 3’ update: How to access old seasonal events
There are other major features added in the latest update, such as the option to play past events. Seasonal contents are originally accessible for a certain period, but “Borderlands 3” now has a new Event Toggle that allows players to revisit “Bloody Harvest,” “Broken Hearts Day,” and the new “Revenge of the Cartels.” The last event mentioned was launched along with the June 24 patch.
Players can find the new option through the Main Menu. According to a Gearbox blog post, there will be toggles for the events allowing players to turn them on or off. This feature will be available on all platforms, including PlayStation, but will not cover limited-time mini-events.
It is also worth noting that Gearbox has increased the level cap in “Borderlands 3” through this update. The new max level is now 72, and vault hunters can play with 70 Skill Points.
