Global Geo-political Series: Mark your calendars on July 7th for Trump-Putin meeting

Kremlin has confirmed that the Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump will hold a meeting on Friday, July 7th, on the first day of the G20 meeting, on the sidelines of that meeting. This is the first time the two leaders would meet face to face. Since President Trump’s election, the duo has talked over the phone four times with the last call held in May. Previously it was not clear whether the two will hold a private meeting or not as both of their scheduled are packed. President Putin is set to hold private meetings with 11 other world leaders.

The White House has confirmed in a statement that the meeting will be a full-fledged sit-down format bilateral meeting, instead of just an informal meet. Kremlin has confirmed that while talks would involve situations in Syria and Ukraine, it will not be limited to that. The meeting is of particular significance as President Trump has said during his campaign and after the inauguration that he wants to restore relations with Russia. These remarks have brought him trouble at home as America’s anti-Russia establishment have been trying to box him with allegations of colluding with Russia during his campaign.

A better relationship with Russia is a must for President Trump if he wants to solve global issues such as Syrian war, Ukraine conflict, North Korea threats or Iran’s nuclear ambition.
