Global Geo-political Series: Qatar blockade and embargo to continue as Gulf leaders dismiss Qatar’s response at Cairo meeting

The foreign ministers of Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Bahrain, and the United Arab Emirates met yesterday in Cairo Egypt to decide the fate of the diplomatic crisis in the Middle East involving Qatar. On June 5th this year, the above-mentioned countries in the Gulf, severed diplomatic ties with Qatar citing the latter’s support for extremist groups and terrorist organizations, as well as meddling in other countries’ affairs. On June 22nd the group presented Qatar with a 13-points demand list to comply within 10 days and then the deadline was extended for 2 more days. Qatar rejected the demands which include stopping support to groups like Muslim Brotherhood, closing Turkish military base in Qatar, and closing news organizations that include internationally acclaimed Al Jazeera. However, it is reported that Qatar provided some compromises and offered dialogues.

After concluding their meeting in Cairo, delegates from the above-mentioned countries dismissed Qatar’s response as not serious and confirmed that the blockade of Qatar would continue unless Qatar comes to its senses on the demands.

Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry told reporters at a joint news conference in Cairo that Qatar's response was generally negative and failed to lay the foundation for Qatar's reversal of the policies it pursues. He also criticized Qatar for failing to realize the gravity of the situation.

The Saudi foreign minister told reporters that further steps against Qatar would be taken at the appropriate time and will be in line with international law. He also said that the current embargo will remain in place unless Qatar revises policies.
