Global Geo-political Series: Saudi led gulf coalition to meet in Egypt as Qatar declines to accept demand but offers compromise

Saudi Arabia-led Gulf countries which severed diplomatic ties with Qatar namely United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, and Egypt would hold a meeting in Cairo to discuss further and future actions on the Qatar issue. The above-mentioned countries triggered a diplomatic crisis, when they severed diplomatic as well as military relations with Qatar and created a blockade in early June 5th, with Qatari ships and flights were denied access to ports.

On 22nd June, these group of countries presented to Qatar a 13-points demand list via Kuwait, which is currently mediating in the crisis. Qatar was given 10 days to comply with the demands that include stopping support for extremist groups like Muslim Brotherhood, removing Turkish military base in Qatar, and stop functioning of media websites that include prominent Al Jazeera. After an initial rejection by Qatar to comply with the demands, the deadline got extended by two more days.

Qatar has reportedly sent an official response to the demands, which was not disclosed via Kuwait just hours before the deadline expired. It has reportedly rejected some of the demands while offering compromises to others. Before the extended deadline expired, Qatari Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani once again rejected the ultimatum, calling some of the demands unrealistic and not actionable. He once again described the demands as an attempt to shut down freedom of speech.

Saudi foreign ministry confirmed the receiving of formal response via Twitter, “The four countries received the Qatari response through the state of Kuwait before the end of the extended period. And it will be responded to at the right time”.
