North Korean leader Kim Jong Un supervised the test-launch of strategic cruise missiles, emphasizing full nuclear attack readiness for national defense, state media reported Friday. The missile test aimed to warn adversaries threatening North Korea’s security and showcase its nuclear operational readiness, according to KCNA.
Kim stated that “powerful striking ability” ensures the country’s best deterrence and defense, reinforcing North Korea’s commitment to strengthening its nuclear capabilities. He stressed the nation’s responsibility to maintain sovereignty through a reliable nuclear shield and enhanced battle preparedness.
The missile launch occurred Wednesday over the sea off the Korean peninsula’s west coast. South Korea’s military confirmed detecting launch preparations and tracking multiple cruise missiles around 8 a.m.
North Korea has developed strategic cruise missiles to carry nuclear warheads, though such missiles receive less international condemnation than ballistic missiles, which are banned under U.N. Security Council resolutions. While the council prohibits North Korea from developing nuclear weapons and ballistic missiles, strategic cruise missiles remain unrestricted.
This missile test follows Kim’s visits to military academies, where he emphasized ideological and tactical training for young officers. Though he did not name specific adversaries, North Korea continues to criticize the U.S. and South Korea. Despite past summit meetings between Kim and U.S. President Donald Trump, tensions remain high.
North Korea’s continued missile testing and nuclear readiness highlight growing security concerns in the region. As geopolitical tensions escalate, the international community closely watches Pyongyang’s military advancements.
