'Law & Order: SVU' Season 20 Air Date, Characters, Plot: How Will the Team Treat Stone After His Sister’s Death?

“Law & Order: SVU” Season 20 is going to be a huge milestone for the police procedural drama as it extends its record for the longest-running scripted non-animated U.S. primetime TV series. While most series would’ve tapered off popularity-wise among viewers, the show is still bringing in a lot of audiences with each renewed season.

The reason why it remains relevant is that the writers loosely base every episode on real-world crimes and events that received media attention. So it goes without saying that the showrunners will incorporate this approach in “Law & Order: SVU” Season 20.

And since there have been several chilling and noteworthy crimes in the past year, expect some – if not most – of them to be referenced in the upcoming “Law & Order: SVU” Season 20. One of the characters in the next installment that will have an interesting development is Peter Stone (Philip Winchester), TV Insider reported.

The finale in the last season saw Stone suffering a major loss as his sister perished after she was abducted by the very suspect that the SVU team was pursuing. The tragedy forced the agent to evaluate his position and why he ever left Chicago for a job in the Big Apple. This isn’t to say that Stone will leave in “Law & Order: SVU” Season 20.

In fact, the character is set to develop a stronger bond with the team and they’ll slowly accept him as part of the squad. Stone wasn’t exactly welcomed when he first joined the precinct as first his case was prosecuting Barba (Raul Esparza). But after the incident, “Law & Order: SVU” Season 20 will have the squad warm up to him as he seeks justice for the death of his sister.

Characters like Stone and the moving storyline of each episode are what make this police procedural drama so successful. It’s so well received that show creator, Dick Wolf, is going to make spin-off out of it called “Law & Order: Hate Crime.” As for the “Law & Order: SVU” Season 20 and its air date, NBC has slated it to return on Sept. 27, Thursday. The premiere episode will have a back-to-back episode similar to what the showrunners did in the final episode of the previous installment.
