Looks like Netflix has decided to pull the plug on another Marvel-related series a week after “Iron Fist” was canceled. In a joint statement on Friday, Netflix and Marvel Television announced there will be no “Luke Cage” Season 3 as the show gets the axe despite the fact that it has been well-received over its two seasons.
“Unfortunately, ‘Marvel’s Luke Cage’ will not return for a third season. Everyone at Marvel Television and Netflix is grateful to the dedicated showrunner, writers, cast and crew who brought Harlem’s Hero to life for the past two seasons, and to all the fans who have supported the series,” the statement reads, via Variety.
This comes as a surprise because unlike “Iron Fist,” viewers actually enjoy “Luke Cage.” Variety also noted that there were talks for a third season, but Netflix didn’t think it would be feasible. Deadline has also reported the same thing, and they added that showrunner Cheo Hodari Coker had been working with writers to come up with the plotline for “Luke Cage” Season 3 in the past six months. Unfortunately, they failed to come up with something that could satisfy both Marvel and Netflix, and the show was canceled when the situation became tense.
“It eventually escalated to behind-the-scenes turmoil in the past two days and demands for changes in creative reign. With Marvel and Netflix seemingly in intractable and different sides of the disputes, a harsh cancelation became the only viable exit strategy, it appears,” Dominic Patten and Nellie Andreeva said in their report for Deadline.
Well, one has to wonder if “Daredevil,” “Jessica Jones,” and “The Punisher” will be canceled as well in the near future. Of course, Disney is planning to launch their own streaming service, but Deadline has noted that Marvel currently has no plans to resurrect the series. That means fans may not get to see “Luke Cage” Season 3.
