“Narcos: Mexico” season 2 has been confirmed to be back on Netflix after it was renewed for another run. The announcement was made in the first week of December and the following week, filming for the new installment has begun.
On Dec. 13, via Twitter, Netflix revealed that “Narcos: Mexico” season 2 is already in production and filming is taking place in Mexico. “ #NarcosMexico brings back Diego Luna and adds Scoot McNairy for Season 2, which is currently in production in Mexico City!” the tweet reads.
As mentioned on The Hollywood Reporter, “Narcos: Mexico” was originally intended to be the drama’s fourth season but it became an entirely new series as the location and focus of the plot have changed. As the new title suggests, the story has moved from Colombia to Mexico as the show will feature the early beginnings of the drug trade. To be more specific, it tackles the rise of Guadalajara Cartel in the 1980s under the leadership of Félix Gallardo (Diego Luna).
The shift from “Narcos” seasons 1 to 3 that tells the story of Pablo Escobar’s Medellín Cartel has made “Narcos: Mexico” even more intense since it presented a more in-depth look into the drug trade business. The first season showed how the drug lords built their illegal narcotics empire and it was an explosive presentation that gained good feedback.
At any rate, when “Narcos: Mexico” season 2 returns, it will feature the new second lead actor. It was confirmed that Diego Luna will still reprise his role as Félix Gallardo but Michael Peña is not coming back since his character, Kiki Camarena, has been killed off in the drama’s finale.
“Narcos: Mexico” season 2 has upgraded Scoot McNairy’s role from season 1’s narrator to DEA agent Walt Breslin. As everyone can guess, he will be the next one to replace agent Kiki and go after Felix Gallardo. It is yet to see if the DEA will win against the drug lords this time.
Scott McNairy was actually already revealed in “Narcos: Mexico” season 1 finale although he was off-screen the whole time. In the final cuts, the DEA agent declared that he is planning to expand the war on illegal drugs and his name was mentioned as agent Walt. The disclosure of the new agent paved the way for “Narcos: Mexico” season 2 plot.
“Narcos: Mexico” season 2 has no air date yet but since filming has already started, fans are likely to see it back on screen in the second half of 2019.
