Nintendo Switch 2 Supports Backward Compatibility, Excites Gaming Community: Report

Upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 to embrace legacy games with backward compatibility feature.

The Nintendo Switch 2, the rumored next piece of hardware from Nintendo, will support physical and digital backward compatibility.

Nintendo Switch 2 Will Be Backwards Compatible, Insiders Claim

This is at least the opinion of the normally knowledgeable “Necro” Felipe Lima of the Portuguese publication Universo Nintendo, who bases his opinion on information provided by Nintendo content creator and journalist PH Brazil. The creator confirmed this in his most recent Spotify podcast.

"PH Brazil is currently a content creator and also a games journalist who has already brought a lot of information about Nintendo's or partners' movements in advance and with precision in the past,” Felipe writes (translated). "Taking its history into account, there is a high chance that this information will become fact when the console is announced."

The Nintendo Switch 2 will be compatible with existing Switch cartridges and the digital library, per PH Brazil and “Necro” Felipe. Furthermore, it has been reported that the functionality has been made accessible to developers. Consequently, this would enable Nintendo to improve Switch titles for its forthcoming hardware.

A well-informed ResetEra forum user named “NateTheHate” endorsed the Switch 2's backward compatibility feature and stated that testing is currently in progress. Regarding current Switch game enhancements, the insider stated that the degree to which games will be improved on the Switch 2 is currently uncertain.

As always, the preceding information should be regarded with reasonable skepticism for the time being. If confirmed, Nintendo enthusiasts will likely be ecstatic to learn that their favorite Switch titles will continue to function on Nintendo's upcoming platform.

This is an extremely rare occurrence in the history of Nintendo hardware. However, this is not the first time we have reported that the new Switch is compatible with current Switch games; in October of last year, Nintendo of America president Doug Bowser seemingly alluded to backward compatibility when he stated that he was attempting to reduce the sales decline between console generations.

"Our goal is to minimize the dip you typically see in the last year of one cycle and the beginning of another. I can't speak to the possible features of a new platform, but the Nintendo Account is a strong basis for having that communication as we make the transition,” he said.

Recent rumors indicate that an official announcement of a Switch successor is extremely probable for the following month, although Nintendo has not yet sanctioned such a date. We reported earlier this year that a 2024 release date for the Switch 2 seems assured.
