Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro owners noticed in the last few days that they cannot install the Android 12L beta 3 update on their phones. Google has now confirmed that the issue is present for devices that were updated to the latest patch that went live last week.
To recap, Google released the February 2022 patch, builds SQ1D.220205.003 on Pixel 6 and SQ1D.220205.003 on Pixel 6 Pro, last Feb. 8. It delivered fixes for issues that caused the Camera app to reboot Pixel 6 devices and problems in audio playback when using certain Bluetooth devices.
Google had once again released a smaller mid-February patch (SQ1D.220205.004) last week with only about 10MB install size. It was not clear what this update resolved, but 9To5Google suggests it may have been related to recent Pixel 6 launches in Italy, Spain, and Singapore.
While the mid-February patch was a small update, it may have had a bigger effect, especially for Pixel 6 owners who want to join the Android 12L beta program. Days after the patch went live, users started reporting that they were unable to install the Android 12L beta 3.
Google has now responded to one of the Reddit posts related to the issue, confirming that the difficulties in installing Android 12L beta 3 are related to the mid-February patch for Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro. Unfortunately, the company will not release a fix and advised affected users to wait for the next Android 12L beta update scheduled to go live in March.
"If you're enrolling a Pixel 6 or Pixel 6 Pro that is on the latest February build SQ1D.220205.004, you will not receive an update to 12L Beta 3, but instead will receive the next upcoming beta build release in March as long as you keep your device enrolled," Google wrote in a response on Reddit.
Android 12L is primarily designed to add more features and improve compatibility between apps and devices with larger screens like tablets and foldable phones. But Google has released its beta updates to Pixel devices, allowing Pixel 6 owners to try some of the new functions before the software version launches.
