“Prison Break” season 6 is a controversial installment for fans of the series. It is not so much that the show's latest season brought back Wentworth Miller (Michael Scofield) from the dead considering the care with which the show's creator, Paul Scheuring, found a way to bring him back in a way that made sense. It also isn't because of the long break between “Prison Break's” 2009 season 4 and the 2017 season 5. The show's controversy is probably because of the limiting factor of settings that its title can bring.
Paul Scheuring has always talked about wanting to go back to the formula of the show's first season. In a reversal of the first season's story arcs, season 5 found Dominic Purcell's Lincoln Burrows doing the rescuing this time around. Interestingly enough, the show's fifth season finale does not leave many threads for “Prison Break” season 6 to pick up and run with. This may be related to Scheuring's own vision.
Because of Scheuring's own admitted personal standards, he has historically had doubts about pursuing “Prison Break” season 6. The show's creator mentions not wanting to simply continue the story for the sake of continuation. Hope for the future of the series may lie in newer characters, which Scheuring himself has expressed interest in developing.
The show's season 5 return greatly expanded “Prison Break's” scope beyond U.S. soil. The introduction of Michael Scofield as alive but not so well in a prison amidst a country that is in conflict definitely opened up the show to a new life, but makes fans wonder if the show has to be renamed into something else aside from “Prison Break.” The revelation of Scofield being a CIA operative that was sent to Yemen due to a global conspiracy's betrayal can only mean so many prisons that the show's established characters can break out of. If the show will continue to stick to its formula of having a prison to break out of, a new set of cast members can hopefully keep the stories fresh.
While “Prison Break” season 6 has been confirmed as being in early development, fans have yet to get a solid confirmation on when the beloved series will be returning on air. Paul Scheuring has yet to release any information on what he has planned for the show's sixth season plot. “Prison Break” fans will just have to sit tight and see if “Prison Break” season 6 will be getting a 2019 release.
