It may be odd for fans of the Netflix series to find out about this, but Frank Castle (Jon Bernthal) was not yet the Punisher in the show. He should have completed his evolution in “Punisher” Season 3, but with news of its cancelation, it would appear that this is no longer happening. This is a pity since fans could have gotten quite the interesting new episodes.
As OtakuKart reports, the folks behind the series had some big plans for it. “Punisher” Season 3, in particular, was supposed to feature the complete evolution of Frank Castle into the anti-hero that comic book fans know and love. In a recent interview, showrunner Steve Lightfoot provided fans with his vision for the third season if it had come to fruition.
“Season two is the second half of him becoming The Punisher. In some ways, it’s closed-ended because now he’s fully adopted that mantel,” he said. “The idea was always that when we got to season three, we would meet Frank in Punisher mode.”
For those who are not clear as to what he is even referring to, the character that fans have seen so far is not the actual Punisher from the comic books. He may have started out as an avenging father and husband, but the real essence of the anti-hero was to kill for justice. This was what “Punisher” Season 3 was supposed to be about.
Basically, Frank Castle was supposed to clean up the streets of gangs and thugs who are endangering families. His skills and experience would have made him perfect for this role. Unfortunately, this is no longer possible since “Punisher” Season 3 is not expected to be taken on by Netflix. Then again, there is always the possibility that Disney will pick up where the show left off.
