Rivian, the electric vehicle manufacturer, has purchased Iternio, the creator of the popular 'A Better Routeplanner' app, aiming to revolutionize EV navigation and enhance its charging network. This comes following Rivian's adoption of Tesla’s charging standard.
Rivian said it will use Iternio’s route planning technology for its sports utility vehicles (SUV) and electric pickups. The company will also apply its data to improve the installation and expansion of its EV charging network.
According to Reuters, the chief executive officer of the EV maker confirmed Rivian’s acquisition of Iternio but did not disclose the financial details of the deal. The news of the purchase comes just a day after the company expressed its intention to adopt the charging standard of Tesla.
This move will allow Rivian drivers to charge their vehicles at any Tesla Superchargers station across the United States and Canada. This is beneficial because Tesla’s EV charging network is currently the largest in the country.
In any case, Iternio was founded in 2018 and is the creator of the “A Better Routeplanner” (ABRP) app, which has become very popular with owners of electric vehicles in Europe and North America. This technology provides route calculation services that also consider weather conditions, vehicle weight, charging stops, and other factors.
“It has been a milestone week for Rivian and for electrification. Coming together with Tesla to adopt the North American Charging Standard opens more fast charging for more EV drivers,” Rivian said in a statement. “Today, we have another announcement to share that reinforces our commitment to an open EV ecosystem we have acquired A Better Routeplanner (ABRP), the world’s most popular consumer EV route planner, and we are committed to continuing its development for all EV drivers.”
Rivian’s CEO, RJ Scaringe, also added, “Beyond route planning, the data insights on where there is insufficient reliable charging will help us strategically plan where we prioritize building our Rivian Adventure Network.”
