U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio met Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski in Washington on Friday to discuss NATO defense investment, market access, and the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war. Rubio emphasized the urgency for NATO allies to boost defense spending and ensure fair, reciprocal trade.

Following the meeting, Sikorski stated he sensed the U.S. was committed to a lasting peace but refrained from commenting on Rubio’s discussions with Russia in Saudi Arabia. Meanwhile, U.S. President Donald Trump has pushed for an end to the Ukraine war, recently speaking separately with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy. Trump’s officials also met Russian counterparts in Saudi Arabia without Ukrainian participation.

Trump has criticized NATO members for insufficient defense spending, despite European allies nearly doubling military expenditures since Russia’s annexation of Crimea in 2014. In 2024, Poland leads NATO members by allocating an estimated 4.1% of its GDP to defense, while eight alliance members still fall below NATO’s 2% guideline. Trump has warned that the U.S. may not protect allies failing to meet spending targets.

With NATO facing growing security challenges, Rubio and Sikorski’s meeting highlighted Washington’s push for stronger defense commitments and balanced trade policies among allies.
