Philippine Vice President Sara Duterte said she has been preparing for impeachment since last year and welcomed her father, former President Rodrigo Duterte, to join her defense team if he wished.
Speaking at a press conference, Duterte stated she had not read the impeachment complaint but confirmed her legal team was ready for trial in the Senate, which is expected in June. When asked if she would resign, she responded, "We're not there yet."
The House of Representatives impeached Duterte on Wednesday, accusing her of constitutional violations, graft, corruption, and betrayal of public trust. The allegations include misusing public funds, amassing unexplained wealth, and threatening President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., the first lady, and the House speaker. She has denied all charges, reiterating she never made assassination threats.
Duterte said her 79-year-old father, a former prosecutor and mayor, was welcome to join her defense but might not lead it due to his age. The vice president has long clashed with former ally Marcos, dismissing the impeachment as politically driven.
To be removed from office, two-thirds of the Senate must vote against her. Both Duterte and Marcos have key Senate allies, making the outcome uncertain. Duterte declined to speculate on her chances of acquittal, stating only, "God save the Philippines."
