Fans are starting to get worried as “Shrek 5” has yet to arrive despite having been confirmed a few years before. The movie was approved when NBCUniversal purchased Dreamworks and in fact, it is one of the first few to have been placed on the planning table as they strategize to give the studio a renewed boost.
The movie is also one of the Dreamworks productions that have been picked to remain in the studio’s list of original film franchises that NBCUniversal is intending to redevelop. However, since its reconfirmation in 2016, there is no update about it yet. So, what happened? Is it still coming?
The reasons why the movie should return
First of all, “Shrek 5” should come back because its script is already complete. Surely, Dreamworks will not waste such written work that a writer had spent sleepless nights to finish.
They also hired a new writer who displayed his great skills in “Boss Baby” and “Austin Powers.” Michael McCullers has been given the position to be “Shrek 5’s” official writer and this means that Dreamworks and NBCUniversal are serious about their plans of reinventing the movie and give it a fresh comeback.
“I finished that script which I really, really, really love and it’s really personal to me,” McCullers told The Hollywood Reporter in 2017. “It’s got a pretty big reinvention behind it that I guess I can’t really reveal, but since DreamWorks was sold to Universal in that time for over $3 billion, I imagine they’re particularly interested in it stepping up and actually figuring out the future of the franchise in that way on the corporate level.”
Also, they can’t scrap “Shrek 5” because millions of fans around the world have been waiting for it for years. The producers know about this so they will surely push through with the project.
What to expect
With its new writer, “Shrek 5” is expected to be released with new storyline that is completely different from the first four movies. The favorite characters will remain and they could add new faces but it will be nothing like the previous “Shrek” films as this one will be modern to go with the changing times. The producers also want to offer something that people today will be able to relate to it could even feature gadgets and hi-tech devices.
Finally, there is a leaked report that stated “Shrek 5” is coming on Sept. 23, 2022.
