Stem cell research and experimentation has been underway for over five decades, due to the potentially massive medical benefits of the unique ability of stem cells to repeatedly divide and replicate and morph into a range of human cells. Furthermore, the “unspecialized” nature of stem cells allows them to differentiate into a wide range of specialized cell types. Traditionally, scientists have been experimenting on both adult and embryonic stem cells as research tools. While embryonic cells have the ability to differentiate between multiple types of cells, there have been significant moral, spiritual, and ethical controversies surrounding the appropriateness of using these cells for research purposes. Although a few types of adult cells exhibit differentiation capacity, it is likely to be limited.
By 2007, Kyoto University conducted a series of follow-up experiments, which transformed the human adult cells into iPSC cells. Nearly at the same time, a group of research scientists at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, led by James Thomson, accomplished the same experiment by deriving iPSC lines from human somatic cells.
The possibilities arising from such experiments have resulted in substantial commercial interest, with potential applications of stem cells ranging from their use in the treatment and reversal of diseases to more targeted pharmacological testing, targeted cell therapy, and tissue regeneration. The rising incidence of Parkinson’s disease, spinal cord injuries, and Huntington’s disease, in which clinical applications of stem cells could offer benefits in reversing or halting the side effects, is also giving impetus to the demand for stem cell research.
