Tesla FSD Beta V12 Edges Closer to Public Release, Showcases Major Improvement

Tesla's Full Self-Driving (FSD) beta version 12 has been a hot subject in recent months, signaling a key transition that will help unlock higher degrees of autonomy. While the highly anticipated FSD v12 has not yet been released publicly, some believe it may be

Tesla FSD Beta V12 Might Be Available Later This Month

Tesla began pushing out the FSD beta v12.1 to Wave1, a group of over 15,000 staff vehicles, last month. Elon Musk, Tesla's CEO, went on to clarify that the software is presently undergoing more testing before it is made available to the general public, as per Teslarati.

Teslascope published a thorough overview of events leading up to this point on X over the weekend in a recent look at where the FSD beta v12 is at ahead of its release, adding that they're "hopeful" that the program will be launched sometime in late January. Furthermore, the account claims that Tesla has initiated internal tests of Actually Smart Summon (ASS), which has a "very likely chance" of being released later in the first quarter.

Teslascope also mentions recent comments on the FSD beta v12 from Wave1 staff, with the majority responding that the program did actually have some significant improvements. These are outlined here, based on at least a dozen reviews shared with Teslascope by California employees:

Tesla FSD beta v12.1: enhanced "human-like behavior" and overall stability

  • FSD beta v12.1 has 72 percent more "human-like behavior" and general stability, according to 72 percent of respondents.
  • 20% reported no change in "human-like behavior" or overall stability.
  • These issues have deteriorated, according to 8% of respondents.

Tesla FSD beta v12.1: roundabout encounter improvements

  • FSD beta v12.1 enhanced roundabout interactions, according to 40% of respondents.
  • Half of those polled stated there has been no change in roundabout interactions.
  • 10% indicated these factors have gotten worse.
  • Tesla FSD beta v12.1: lane-keeping enhancements

FSD beta v12.1 improved lane-keeping for 37% of respondents.

  • Sixty percent stated there has been no change in lanekeeping.
  • These issues have deteriorated, according to 3% of respondents.

Cybertruck Launch Spurs Tesla's Focused Efforts on Advanced FSD Beta Development

Despite the optimism, the account also mentions that the Cybertruck release has prompted Tesla to devote more resources to developing a solid FSD beta build for the vehicle, despite Musk previously stating that the electric pickup would be the lowest priority for the FSD beta. The account states that delays are probable due to the extra effort put into this and that they are continuing to monitor the ongoing distribution of the version to people in the Wave1 group.

Last year, Tesla revealed plans for the FSD beta v12, which included the removal of over 300,000 lines of human-written code that formerly controlled operations like steering, acceleration, and braking. Instead, v12 is likely to depend largely on its neural network, training its artificial intelligence (AI) through vast quantities of real-time driving data and employing the neural network to actively manage the car rather than merely identify obstacles.

Musk also presented the FSD beta v12 in an August live webcast, and he has stated that the version will remove its "beta" label. Tesla began rolling out FSD v12 to employees in November, and images from the Wave1 group appear to indicate that the version will retain the beta label.
