“The Blacklist” season 6’s premiere date in January was confirmed recently. However, some fans are worried that the show was moved to a new schedule.
Shortly after NBC ordered “The Blacklist” season 6, it was confirmed that it will air on a new timeslot. Instead of returning to its previous Wednesday timeslot, the upcoming season takes on a new regular schedule every Friday at 9 p.m. ET.
While this might seem like an innocent timeslot change for “The Blacklist” season 6, avid fans of TV shows know that this timeslot is usually referred to as the “Friday night death slot.” In the United States, once a show is moved to a Friday night schedule between 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. ET, the common belief is that it is close to being canceled.
And this small detail did not escape some eagle-eyed fans waiting for the release of “The Blacklist” season 6. In an online discussion, Redditor u/KenKeseyKat agreed that NBC “has a history of throwing its lower-rated shows … to Friday nights.”
The same fan also noted that the “The Blacklist” season 6 will replace the timeslot used to be occupied by the TV series adaptation “Taken.” Interestingly, the latter was canceled just after its second season that concluded last June.
Fans may have also noticed that “The Blacklist” season 6 missed its usual Fall season premiere. But on a more positive note, NBC did not downgrade the length of the series and still ordered a 22-episode run.
There is no written guideline that a show will not be renewed once it falls into the so-called Friday night death slot. “The Blacklist” season 6 also offers an entirely new story with the revelation that the Reddington (James Spader) fans knew for five seasons had been an imposter all along. So there is still chance for a seventh season as long as NBC does not cancel the show.
Meanwhile, “The Blacklist” season 6 will officially premiere on Friday, Jan. 4, 2019 on NBC. It will be a two-hour episode so this installment will begin at 8 p.m. while the next episodes will follow the regular 9 p.m. ET schedule.
