“The Walking Dead” Season 9 Episode 9 is only a few weeks away and AMC is ramping up the marketing campaign for the mid-season premiere. In a recent interview given by Angela Kang with Entertainment Weekly, the showrunner elaborated on the motivation of The Whisperer’s, the show’s new antagonist.
“We will get to meet the amazing Samantha Morton as Alpha and Ryan Hurst as Beta, as our heroes are really grappling with how to deal with a threat that’s unlike anything they’ve ever faced with people with such a different philosophy,” Kang said. This philosophy that she mentioned revolves around the brutal survival of the fittest mechanism. The showrunner added that “The Walking Dead” Season 9 Episode 9 will start exploring this cult’s goal and how they want to shape the world after the apocalypse brought civilization to its knees, Digital Spy reported.
In the comics, The Whisperers have followed a strict rule of trying to coexist with the undead. They have a primitive hierarchal structure with Alpha at the pinnacle and Beta directly below the leader. The group is also practicing a nomadic way of living, never staying in one place and moving with walking corpses that they’re traveling with. But what’s really twisted in their belief system is that rape is a normal social construct within their society. Indeed, even Lydia (Cassady McClincy) – Alpha’s daughter – isn’t afforded protection from the members of The Whisperers. Fortunately, Lydia will be pulled out from the cult in “The Walking Dead” Season 9 Episode 9 as Daryl (Norman Reedus) and the group will take her hostage.
This new character will play an integral part in the eventual collapse of The Whisperers, with Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) acting as the main catalyst for their demise. While this is merely speculation at this point, it’s expected that Negan will be given a redemption story this installment. The trailer for “The Walking Dead” Season 9 Episode 9 already hinted at this plot development where fans saw the villain walking freely and whistling ominously. The mid-season premiere is certainly quite the episode to follow when it airs this February.
