“The Winds of Winter” is coming, George R.R. Martin assured his fans as they continue to wait after several years of repeated delays. The 70-year-old author revealed “TWOW” in 2011 and since then fans have been looking forward to this “A Song of Fire and Ice” installment.
When “The Winds of Winter’s” release was delayed twice, rumors that it would never hit bookstores started to spread. But each time, George R.R. Martin communicated with his fans through his blog. Although he does not update it regularly, he makes sure to share details about the novel from time to time.
At any rate, George R.R. Martin’s latest update about “The Winds of Winter” came somewhere else. In August, he attended the fundraising event for The Locus Science Fiction Foundation and was interviewed by John Picacio. He was asked about his progress in the sixth book in the “ASOIAF” novel series and he gladly revealed that it is still in the works.
“Working on it!” he told Picacio. “I am working on it. You’ll know when it’s done. The shot that’s heard around the world!”
George R.R. Martin had another Q&A event with PBS’s “The Great American Read,” named Villains and Monsters. In here, he shared how he creates his villains for “The Winds of Winter” and his other novels. How and where does he get his ideas for the villainous characters?
The author said that he creates the baddies in his books without thinking of them as villains. He narrated that it is not easy to do but definitely, he doesn’t form his monsters in this way.
“I don’t try to write anyone who’s, ‘Oh, I’m a villain. Let me get up today and just go out and do villainy and pull the world to darkness,’” he shared.
His way of creating characters is actually a reflection of the present humankind, “They all have grievances,” Martin relayed. “They all have wounds, and they have things that drive them to do the things that they do.”
Meanwhile, fans should know that before “The Winds of Winter” arrives, George R.R. Martin is releasing “Fire and Blood” first. This is a fictional book that will reveal the history of the Targaryens and it will be out on Nov. 20.
