KFC Japan is bringing back its tsukimi sandwiches with fried eggs topping the fried chicken based on the autumn tradition of tsukimi, or moon-viewing on August 31.
In addition to meaning “moon-viewing,” tsukimi is also shorthand for “egg.”
While tsukimi soba and udon could be found in Japan at any time of year, KFC Japan only brings out its tsukimi sandwiches around the tsukimi season in the fall.
Diners who want the sandwich to be as Japanese as possible should pick the Torori Tsukimi Wafu Katsu Sandwich or Melty Tsukimi Japanese-style Cutlet Sandwich.
It consists of a chicken cutlet drizzled with a teriyaki soy sauce topped with a fried egg and with a layer of shredded cabbage, which is customarily included in a katsu meal.
There’s also the Torori Tsukimi Chicken Filet Sandwich, which uses a more traditional fried chicken-style breading than the panko crusting of the katsu sandwich, and also contains lettuce instead of cabbage.
Both katsu sandwiches are priced at 460 yen or 490 yen with cheese and are available for a limited time while supplies last.
